Pipe Major’s Report
In April, I had two memorable occasions to represent the band away from the Castlemaine area. Firstly, at University House (University of Melbourne) for their Burns Night. This was a delightful evening in which I piped the special guests into the venue, piped in the Haggis and also had the task of accompanying Scottish mezzo-soprano, Vivien Hamilton on the piano in a setting of Seven Scots Tunes by John Geddes. Many thanks to the members of CHPB who supported me in this event – and to Ian Wilson for last minute plaid adjustment!
Secondly, as a member of the Victorian Pipers Associtation, I was invited to have lessons with PM Terry Tully. In the band and solo piping circles he is highly regarded as one of the finest players and exponents of piping and his skills as pipe major. His band, St Laurence O’Toole are non other than the world champions.
I was lucky enough to have two lessons with Terry and worked through the CHPB repertoire. I very much look forward to disseminating the stylistic knowledge onto the players in our band. Maybe he will come and visit us in Castlemaine one day?
